Default USB Shuts Down PC?

I have an issue with my USB port for some external devices. When I hook up anything via USB, my computer just shuts down. Then if I reboot my system with the device still attached, it works fine. This happens even if I stop the device before disconnecting it, completely disconnect the USB cable - I have tried a lot of things. I have Windows 2000 Professional, and I am thinking that is the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Going by the details you have given here and the nature of the problem I think it must be some power related issues. You should check the USB port and you can also try using Windows XP.

I think I forgot to mention that the USB port works fine for other things - it's just my camera and my MP3 player - both of which are supposed to be approved for Windows 2000. I don't want to upgrade to XP until I buy a new computer, because when I tried to upgrade to XP - it made my computer shut down randomly with no warning. I'd much rather deal with the USB problem.

Is this a laptop or a desktop? Have you consulted the troubleshooting sections in either of the manuals for the mp3 player or the camera?

It's a desktop - and yes, I have consulted both manuals. Neither of them mention this problem, and neither does HP's website... so I am stuck. I am probably going to buy a new computer within the next year, so I am just putting up with it right now. I just don't want it to continue on my new pc. I do think it's related to Windows 2000 though - since the other USB items I have are older, but the camera and MP3 player are new.

You better check your board of the PC, or the power supply or better go to a service center where they can help you must regarding hardware problems.

I have encountered this before. There some software errors in this. It didn't happen to me when I was using my SE to connect to the USB but when I used a Nokia USB connector, it happened.
