A Convenience or a Bother
Sometimes I wonder whether cell phones are more of a bother than a convenience for me. People just expect you nowadays to have a cell phone, to always have it switched on and to always answer it. I wonder whether a lot of our personal time is being swallowed up by technology. There once was a time when you could go out and take some time alone, without being bothered by anyone. Nowadays, it seems you're meant to have your mobile phone with you. I deliberately leave mine at home quite often, unless I'm expecting an important call.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I am constantly wired. I don't like it, but it's a fact of my life now with family across the country, a wife at home, and a company that expects me to answer when they call. I miss the time when I didn't have a cell phone attached to my side.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
It's a bit sad really, because I think that all this new technology that is designed to give us more leisure time and make things easier for us in many cases makes things more difficult and cuts away our leisure time completely. I love the new technology. I think it's great. But there's another part of me that loves leaving my cell phone uncharged!

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I totally agree! My friends will just keep calling til they get ahold of me because they assume I didn't hear it ring or whatever. Private time is simply gone!

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
For me, the cellphone is just another way people can have access to me whenever they feel like it however inconvenient. My answer? Turning it off whenever I don't want to deal with anyone.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
nice insights there, historyclass. i leave my cellphone whenever i want to or when i'm not expecting an important message or call, especially since it's dangerous nowadays to have one with all the thieves around ready to hold a bus up.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I might keep my cell phone on (I have small children and might need to be contacted), but I often put it on vibrate (although I have mistaked this for a bug in my pants on more than one occassion). And since I have caller ID, I know if I need to answer or not.
I do wonder how some people made it through life BEFORE cell phones. These are the same people who get in the car to drive around just so they can make phone calls (at least that's how it feels when the cut me off).

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
A cell phone is a convenience when you want to use it. It's a bother when someone calls you (and you forgot to turn the stupid thing off).

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I personally think my cell phone is a bother, heck, I even think my land line is a bother. I find it rude to be talking to someone and then get interupted by a phone call. I always let the phone go while I'm in a conversation and then check it later. The phone is a very egosentric piece of technology. It thinks it is the only thing that really matters in the universe. I like to tell it off by ignoring it.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
Amobile phone is very good for a small peice of technology!
It has got alot of people in bother when the other half reads texts etc!
But for people in really dangerous situations I would take it that it has helped alot!
I think some people go a little too far with their mobiles!
My friend hates it when hers has broken or anything she feels as tho a part of her is missing which is pretty sad!

Cell phones are like any thing else in life - it is great if used wisely, but it will ensnare you if you let it.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I have also thought about it and I have already started following few simple rules. First of all I try to minimize my talking time on Mobile. Just try to keep it as minimum as possible. Switch it off after reaching home. Actually there should be Mobile ethics.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
Convenience without a doubt. If I don't want to take a call, I don't. I press the little button and send it straight to voicemail.
Poorly timed calls on my cell are far less frequent than the multitudes of telemarketing calls on my home phone and there's no convenient voicemail button.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
to be honest, I carry my cell phone for emergencies only, only close friends/family/school have my mobile number - the others I simply tell them I don't own a mobile phone. I'm a bit old fashioned here but I don't really want to be bothered all that much while i'm out and away from the phone.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I'm almost the opposite. I have a group of people that I only communicate by cell with.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I bought mine for emergencies. I've been broken down on rural roads too many times not to have one! Ironically, it hasn't been long since cell phone service was available out here.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
Definitely, I wouldn't drive around rural roads or even just late night driving without one, it's one of my biggest nightmares I think to be stranded out in the middle of no where late at night.

Re: A Convenience or a Bother
I have mine for emergencies and because I have a long commute to work. I also have one for work, and of course that one gets used like crazy - any time I am not at my desk, they call my cell phone. I actually find it a little frustrating - if I'm not at my desk, I'm in a meeting, at lunch, in the bathroom, or gone for the day... all reasons that they shouldn't be able to talk to me anyway!
