Default Anyone have Vonage?

Does anyone here have Vonage? I just signed up with them...so far it is okay though I don't like the idea that I won't have a phone line if my internet is down.

I have vonage and before that lingo. I based my decision on the fact that our electric and internet are incredibly stable and have had few outages.

I used to work for the cable company and know certain areas I wouldn't even try to get vonage with. It's great for long distance, and all over as a phone service, however if your area goes out a lot it would be best to have either a mobile phone handy or a no frills landline just in case.

Just be careful with Vonage, because one of the big problems they are having is with 911 service. Here's a link to an article about it on CNET. Deadly delay on Vonage 911? | CNET News.com They are being sued because 911 doesn't always work - you get an error message. The lawsuits are for wrongful death, because when you dial 911, you need it to go right through.

If you have Vonage and don't rewire or cut the lines to the phone jacks, you should still be able to get 911 service on the old line. IIRC, most municipalities require access to 911 even when there is no phone service. Unfortunately, rewiring the jacks so you can use VOIP the same way you used landline will cost you this ability.

The price difference isn't significant enough to switch. For me, it would only be $3.00.

I really don't know much about this stuff, but I keep hearing a lot about it all of a sudden. I am not sure what the difference is between this and the service we had back in 95 when we called someone up using our computer...it was pretty cool technology for the time, so now I'm wondering what the hubbub's all about...

The service has infinitely improved in the last ten years. It's clear and the prices if you call overseas alot are brilliant. I pay $24.99 a month for unlimited domestic and European calls. For me it pays because of all the family I have over there. Two hour phone calls for free lol.

I still wish I could remember what program it was we used on our old computer...it seemed to come with it. It was an Acer Aspire.

I think you'll find it's all much simpler now than it used to be. This is nothing more than plugging in a phone and getting going.

The unlimited European calls are included in the $24.99? I need to check into this. My husbands family lives in the UK. I wasnt aware there was an international plan. We dont use much long distance within the US, and what we do use, we just use the cell phones for, but if the international calls are included, then that would be awesome.

Yes, it includes unlimited calls to the UK and Central Europe. It's great because I have family there too. It's hysterical to look at your call log and see hour long calls to there and know that it's within the monthly rate. I love it.

Also, I live in a rural area and I must admit that the land line has been out during Spring storms more than the cable and power. We have a generator lol.

Great! Thanks for the suggestion and the information. I will definitely be getting ahold of them. It will be so nice for my husband to be able to call his family without it costing us a fortune.

Yup, they send you the modem free. Plug it in. Plug in a regular phone and you're calling. It took me five minutes literally.
