Default Laptops not durable?

A friend of mine who is a computer technician told me that laptops are not that durable and it is not easily fixed, too. This discourages me from buying one. Is this true? What are some of the things that we have to consider when buying a laptop?

No way. I am the most accident prone person on earth. I've dropped my Dell Inspiron several times and it works just fine. I even unplugged it without the batter by mistake and Dell sent me a new hard drive cause it got damaged. Its the future. Go for it!

I go for a laptop if it met my needs.

However just as with a desktop, I'd make sure I did regular backups.

Word2Action, it is good that you got your laptop from Dell as they are very good in this. The way I understand it, it depends on the brand and the service because my friend's advice is that I must make sure of the continued service after buying the laptop.

I never heard that. I think most laptops can be repared if taken to the right place. Some may be harder to fix than others but shouldn't be impossible. I know people in school with dell, compaq, and IBM laptops and have had those repaired no problem.

I think they can be repaired quite easily as well - unless you break the lcd screen. All depends too on the manufacturer some are better than others so you have to do your homework first

With the right warranty you'll be alright. I know that I got a replacement warranty on my desktop from Dell (I always have a house full of kids), and on the phone we bought from CorrWireless (even covers unfortunate temper tantrums, although it's not worded that way).

Using laptop is very portable, but when it comes to the price of the parts this is much higher than desktops, and when you will upgrade your laptop its better to buy a new one rather than to upgrade the parts

When I bought my laptop, the extended warranty came with a screen change that would cost more than the warranty. I didn't buy it because I figured I'd be replacing the laptop after 2-3 years anyway.

I don't think so. I am using my one for more than 2 and half years. I must say I have never cared much about the product. But it is fine. Laptops are supposed to be made in a way so that they can take all the stress and non-care.

The friend sounds jealous. LOL

I was a computer tech and the reality is that laptop repair is a specialty skill that most regular techs don't have. While you should obviously use caution not to abuse your laptop, many are quite durable. They are built to be moved around. We have ThinkPads almost all over our house and the kids have certainly dropped them. Only once did it create an issue, but we were able to raid the parts machine and repair it.

I have a work laptop and a home laptop, and they are both pretty durable - especially my work one, since I tote it around so much.

All computer items that are over used and not taking care of it, its easily been damaged, so we should be responsible on it.
