Hi there and here is my recommendation for a good laptop for a good price and it has a little surprise.

emachines M6805/M6809 Althon 64 (1.8 Ghz/60 Gig HD/ ATI Graphics).
M6809 has a DVD burner builtin.

If you shop around it can be gained for about $600 or so. If you google around, you will find it is a Arima based and designed laptop.

Running Linux/Knoppix great. Usually comes with XP. Huge screen (well nice to me). Speakers suck but thats okay (nothings perfect). Multimedia reader, four USB2 ports, Firewire, Ethernet , 56k modem or and yes, Broadcom internal Wifi. Runs on a battery but it is an A64. It is more of a desktop replacement.

M6805 comes with a DVD/CD burner and the M6809 is a DVD burner.

Buy a processor chip, pull apart the laptop, and it will go faster.

Nice suggestion. I am in need of a basic laptop to do some remote writing chores and such. I do not want to spend a ton of money. I actually owned some E-Machine PCs back in the day and they worked well.

Does it happen to have wireless built-in?

That's what I thought too. That is a good deal though for that type of notebook and what is included on it.

I'd be skeptical about buying any e-machine... but laptops really are a whole different ball park... Just keep in mind you usually get what you pay for... But this is coming from an avid computer user who is rather skeptical about any of the companies who manufacture pre-built machines, none of them have ever been as good in the desktop market as a professionally built (or built by yourself) machine. Anyone else out there with experience with emachine's laptops? You've sparked my interest.

Well, GadgetSniper there was a reason for that post.

I don't talk from the side of my mouth. I am not afraid of trying any emachines or any other brand. I mention the emachines/arima laptop because it was a good deal for me and I wanted to see what it had to offer.

I posted this so if someone wanted a powerbox that is a desktop replacement, I have been using this and it has been my #1 flagship computer since it has arrived. No hardware flaws and other than minor electric glitching with the LCD display, it has been one of the most promising pieces of hardware I have owned.

So far, all that I have heard from you is unneeded skepticism based on elitism and bias.

Huh? Did that make any sense?

emachines bought Arima boxes , rebadged them and resold them. Does that make them any less better?

Remember that this is a forum for people trying out gadgets and reporting what or whats does not work.

Good. From your response, I would have thought I wasted my time doing that post. If the quaility of the responses continue on this level, I will go elsewhere and you can sit here and enjoy what you said.

My friend has an e-machine desktop and he likes it a lot.

But i don't know about buying an e-machine laptop...

If he likes his machine a LOT, ask him to imagine if he had the money, and there was a laptop that would run 3x faster than his desktop, and it was an e-machines, would he buy it?

Stop looking at the badge. Don't you know that other people designed stuff under different brands just because they don't want to 'taint' their brand?

Buick was the prototype for Cadilac. Aiwa was the same for Sony. Quite a few models under Volkswagen were designed by Ferrari.

Jk jk, it sounds more like your trying to sell the item. Sounds good enough for a laptop but, i like desktop better.

I agree. My sister only believes in name brands and I am constantly telling her that Toyato makes Lexus.

I've been using Gateway laptops for the past 3 years.

Not the most popular, but I really like them.
