I bought a new desk top last year, but would like to add a lap top to my tech gadgets. I went with dell, but have been reading some negative things about them. I would like to go to a Mac, but want the laptop to be compatible with the desk top. Any suggestions? For now, I just need a machine that will be good for my fiction writing - maybe wireless work.

Go to a reputable shop and tell them what it is your looking for!
Steer clear away from the back street shops as they are the ones in which tend to drain you from your cash!
Lots of major high street retailers around my area are more than happy to offer you what it is you require!

Dell brand is good model, you could also try IBM models, let them know the specs that you would like for your laptop

Has anyone bought anything from Staples along this line? I've been real impressed with the folks that work at our local store and I think they could do me right, but I want to make sure they sell quality as well.

I have bought office supplies from Staples, but find them VERY expensive for electronic items. If you get some type of corporate discount (we get one from Dell) you might do okay there.
