Default Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Laptops

Advantages of laptops/notebooks that include the portability of the device itself. One reason some often prefer laptops especially businessmans is that they are able to bring work home or on travel with them without having to worry about saving files to disk or leaving things at the office.

Often a laptop provides more flexibility in terms of where you can work - you can move it around easily and you don't have to worry about lugging around lots of equipment.

Disadvantages to laptops include a higher cost per dollar, an increased security risk (both data and equipment), a more limited upgrade path, and sometimes a compromise on keyboard, pointing device, and screen resolution. Most folks, however, believe that the advantages of portability and flexibility greatly outweigh these disadvantages.

Yes, it's the portability that sells the latops for sure - it's USP.

Why is the data on the portable more at risk. It is because more people potentially have access to the portable? Or are they more vulnerable to hacking through the web?

i wouldn't know the answer to your question, kelkat. but i'm very sure that our laptop has been really helpful for me and my whole family. for our 3-day vacation to 3 places last summer, with the help of our laptop we were able to take more than 1000 pictures with our digicam since we can immediately transfer photos to our laptop. also, it served quite a great purpose during my hell weeks in college when i had to finish lesson plans and thesis drafts.

The data is more at risk because of the portability. Laptops are at a greater risk of being stolen because you carry them in more places and they are lightweight. You lose the laptop, you lose the data. Insecure wireless networks can also leave the data at risk.

In using laptops you should always have your back up especially if you buy a second hand unit, i know everyone of us dont like that kind of risk even if its new you should always be ready especially if the files are very very important.

That's where home networks and USB sticks come in. lol

I know not everybody has a home network with backup systems in place, so just remember to back up to USB (or CD or DVD if you have a burner) on a regular basis.

I have to agree with Taiarain, backing up is quite essential to making sure your information on a laptop is safe - I learned this the hard way to say the very least

I'm sorry to hear that, Felice. I hope you didn't lose too much. Was it a crash, theft or something a little easier to recover from?

So many new concepts are coming these days, which is taking some sparkle off the Laptop. Unless the person really needs a computer on the move I think one can manage lot of work on the move even without a Laptop. There are concepts like online office. Google already offering online office tools like spreadsheet. There are gadgets like PDA's which gives general user a handy tool to keep data also. Moreover you have Flash drives. So a better PDA's with Flash drive support might be a shorter version of Laptop?

It really does depend on what a person needs to accomplish during the day and how much travel is in involved. For me, the laptop is pretty valuable because I have a two hour (each way) train trip a couple of times a week. With a laptop, I can get a lot of writing done ...and easily. Other days, a pda works just fine.

I have a long commute too - I wish that mine was on a train so I could get work done too! I can't really work while I am driving. Is there a laptop that does that??? LOL

LOL ...it's why I take the train! The commute is the same driving or taking the train, and the train actually costs a little more, but I'm not nearly as tired since I can nap on the train. If I drove all the time, I'd be investing in Sirus or something to listen to!

We are so much alike! I don't have the option of a train, so I did invest in Sirius. They are working on a light rail system here, but it's in the middle of the city, not anywhere near my house in the suburbs! Oh well, at least I have good, commercial free music!

Laptops are certainly a good option when the person has to do multi-tasking. Yeah, now not only processors, we are also adjusting ourselves with the concept of multi-tasking. So when we are travelling we are also working (if possible) and Laptops are just for that.

The one good thing about a driving commute is that there's only so much multi-tasking you can do ...with that remote thingie in your ear. On the train, it's like an extension of the office!

I was all about the desktop until I finally broke down and got a laptop. I love my laptop. I take it everywhere. And a lot of public places have wi fi anymore, so you can even jump on the net and check your email when you are out to lunch. I don't think I will ever go back to a desktop.

I wouldn't mind the disadvantage of paying more to keep my laptop insured and protected from any accidents or events like theft, as well as for the speed and security while using it.
