Default Microsoft Origami, a mini laptop, unveiled

Microsoft Corp. unveiled its 'Origami' project Thursday, a paperback-book sized portable computer, which is a hybrid between a laptop PC and a host of mobile devices that the world's biggest software maker hopes will create an entirely new market.

Lighter than two pounds with a seven-inch touch-screen, the new "ultra-mobile" PCs (UMPCs) use microprocessors from Intel Corp. (Research) and run a modified version of Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC edition.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. and China's second largest PC-maker, the Founder Group, are expected to release the first three ultra-mobile PCs, which Microsoft (Research) had code-named "Origami" in an elaborate marketing campaign.

Default Is it gonna be big?

This is new and has the potential of being big. There was a rumour that its gonna cost only $800. We'll see if that's true.

The factors that will decide if this is a good buy are:

battery life
speed
the number of programs ready to be placed on the UMPC.

But sometimes Microsoft over-hypes things.

Eish this is microsoft, they don't deal in specs, they simply hype and then sell, the 260 is far less impressive that it was hyped to be.,...

It sounds interesting and the price isn't outrageous. I'd have to hear and see more about it to form make a complete opinion.

It seems interesting but I can see potenial problems such as stablity of the keyboard and possible bending issues.

I think it looks quite interesting, my problem is i have a hard enough typing on my regular laptop, I couldn't imagine such small little keys - would make things more difficult for me at least. lol
