Default Knowing if others are logged in

We have a wireless network in our house. We have 3 laptops connected to it. What I would like to know if anyone has the answer is, is it possible to tell if someone else is logged on with another computer if you are on one? I hope that makes sense, if not let me know and I will try to clarify

Do you mean logged onto the network or on the computer?
I know that if it is the network, your signal strength will decrease as well as the speed of connecting to the internet.

Curious question. I'd be guessing that Roxy is correct, but it's still curious.

I'm sure there is more to it than that but I have heard this response and it seemed logical. I'm also thinking that there is a way to find out how many computers are logged onto the network and the IP addresses but I have not had that problem so I don't really investigate...

All you have to do is check your network settings it will let you know what IP's are accessing.. In all honesty you should have this locked down, as anyone can get on and there are backdoors into the areas you think are secure but really are not.

I need to start writing down our IP addresses so I know who is safe, because we have quite a few computers in the household. I guess the safest thing to do is to create an encrypted password on the connection.

Oh ok, thanks! I don't know why but I always thought it could be something you could find on the computer, like its part number, etc...
Shows how much I know, even though I've been a computer user since a wee child :P

Oh ok. I think once before I used a program that could find it then using it later, I got a different number. I'm not sure if perhaps I changed computers (I used to do that when each one started having a problem, we have plenty laying around) or if it is possible that one computer can change IPs, or if it has that number forever... I know a lot about computers, but not what I should know I guess haha

Actually yes you can change IP's, If you use dial up your always changing IP's, if you use DSL or Cable, you do not change very often but they do change.

Your IP is actually released every 24 hours and refreshed, but usually you just nab the same one back, of course with this I am referring to if you have dsl or cable.

I can explain in more detail if you want me too? lol

Haha...wow, I know they change for safety reasons, but doesn't it make it difficult to remember your number in case you need it? And it's a good thing numbers are endless, I could only imagine how many combinations you could come up with...
